The shootings at the offices of Charlie Hebdo, a satirical publication in Paris, made a heartbreaking day for illustrators at newspapers such as The Chronicle Herald, The National Post and The Montreal Gazette.
The incident took 12 lives, including those of three cartoonists and the newspaper's editorial director.
Terry Mosher, a Gazette cartoonist better known as "Aislin," called the French publication's cartoonists the "standard bearers for testing the system."
"That's the epitome of a democracy, when you can laugh at yourself and your institutions," he said.
Being cartoonists, the Canadian artists reacted as only they could. They illustrated heartfelt, satirical and ultimately powerful takes on the shootings.
