NEW YORK, N.Y. - During some perilous times for the cable news networks, CNN is finding, to its relief, that there's still some resonance to the 1960s.

The Nielsen company said that the start of a series of look-backs to that decade last week more than doubled the weeknight audience that CNN usually gets in its time slot. "The Sixties" is an important step in CNN's strategy to mix in more general nonfiction programming with its live news and talk.

The biggest cable news networks — CNN, Fox News Channel and MSNBC — have all been taking a drubbing in the ratings lately during a slow news period with a presidential election more than two years away.

In prime time last week, HBO's "Game of Thrones" had its second biggest audience ever on Sunday.
