Quality Meat Packers In Creditor Protection: Toronto Slaughterhouse To Close Shop?

A major pork processor has filed for creditor protection -- a move that could impact one of Toronto's most notorious slaughterhouses.

According to BlackburnNews.com, the Quality Meat Packers, along with Toronto Abattoirs Limited, stresses the move does not spell bankruptcy for the companies.

Instead, under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, the firms will be protected from creditors for at least 30 days, allowing them to look into restructuring options.

Quality Meat Packers has operated an abattoir in Toronto's King and Bathurst area for the last 80 years -- a presence that has become increasingly repugnant to the growing number of residents, according to the Toronto Star.

The stench of pig -- and the sight, some argue, of terrorized animals being trucked to their doom -- reaches its acme in the summer months, as more people stroll the neighbourhood. And rather inconveniently, come across idling trucks packed with sweltering pigs earmarked for execution.
